Award Recipients

2015

David Kenneally, $5000

  • Was a teenage parent

  • Worked full time to put himself through college while juggling utility bills and trying to support his wife and growing family – always had 2 jobs

  • His children’s school did not have a qualified computer science teacher so he volunteered as the teacher for six years

  • While finally attending AUC full-time, his older children were in college at the same time

  • Continues to work as a programmer on breaks/holidays in order to financially support his family

Kevin Kresofsky, $5000

  • Lost his dad at 13 years of age

  • Wants to give back to people

  • Joined multiple clubs and organizations at AUC

  • He gave back by participating in community action day with a variety of activities that ranged from cleaning up trash to painting orphanages

  • After leaving the island he continued with community action - participated in a basketball tournament for underprivileged students as a volunteer of the hospital at Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center, and also took part in a community health day with the hospital, during which he visited patients at their respective homes to give them healthcare information and guidance.

  • Wants to be able to provide pro-bono care for patients in underserved neighborhoods, so that no patient would be hesitant to bring their questions or concerns. 

  • Would also love to open healthcare clinics in these underserved areas so that no patient goes untreated. 

Vicken Zeitijian, $5000

  • He served as president of the student body with a focus on service throughout the island

  • Was able to contribute to free Project HELP (health, educate, literacy, prevention) clinics, diabetes screening clinics, and organization of a school-wide donation program for the Battered Women’s Foundation of Saint Maarten

  • After obtaining the MD degree from AUC, he wants to participate in a mission trip to Armenia with an organization called Birthright

  • Birthright organizes volunteer work in Armenia in various fields for youth between the ages of 20-32.

  • Is Armenian by nationality and has always wanted to give back to his country through the medical branch of Birthright Armenia

  • Had a previous trip to Honduras with Global Medical Brigades before starting medical school

  • His goal is to go on a one-month mission after graduating medical school by April 2016 and before beginning residency

2016

Carson Schell, $5000

  • Involved with the “White Yellow Cross”, a program consisting of approximately 14 clients with varying degrees of Alzheimer’s disease

  • Had the responsibility in the AIDS Foundation to arrange volunteers for testing events, conduct training exercises, take sexual histories and conduct HIV tests 

  • Was fortunate enough to receive a grant and purchased an auto-refractor that was instrumental in establishing the Caribbean Eye Screening Initiative

  • Attained the contact information of a company that sells recycled eye wear and was able to effectively distribute over 120 prescription eye glasses to children, free of charge

  • Received the Karl Stockhausen Award in September, 2015, and used the award to purchase a vision screening device

Goli Shenasan, $5000

  • Had over 300 volunteer hours experience of at hometown hospital

  • Organizing work for 4 years with the Red Cross

  • In Cusco, Peru volunteered 5 hours a day at an understaffed state clinic and another 5 hours a day at an orphanage to aid children who suffer from mental and physical disabilities

  • In Peru she learned how human compassion in the absence of adequate resources can change lives and prevent disease

  • Is multilingual and has the emotional/spiritual background of a family in which medicine has been and is a pillar

  • While an undergraduate she volunteered in a major hospital, and also was involved in research

  • Has tutored in four courses, was an AMSA workshop coordinator, and president of AMSA

Bryan Stringer, $5000

  • Was raised in a family of volunteerism

  • During his second year of undergrad he wrote the song “Cure”, dedicated to his mother and her fight with cancer

  • Performed the song at two of the largest fundraising events held by the Canadian Cancer Society 

  • As a 20 year cancer survivor, his mother is a counselor of and mentors other cancer victims, and uses his song to motivate and inspire these patients

  • Was a cofounder and volunteer coordinator of the White and Yellow Cross (WYC) Committee

  • Served as a class tutor for cell biology, physiology and pathology

  • Was selected to be a Harvey Manikin Simulation Lab TA

2017

David Freeman, $3000

  • Was a paramedic as well as a paramedic instructor

  • Is a certified advanced cardiac life support provider and instructor

  • Healthcare provider and cardiopulmonary resuscitation provider and instructor

  • Is a pediatric advanced life support provider and instructor

  • Volunteer fire department emergency medical service personal

  • Paramedic volunteer

  • Taught AMSA airway management, basic and advanced suturing and intravenous phlebotomy

  • Created a workshop including video laryngoscopy with manual and mechanical intraosseous infusion

Patrick Padagor, $5000

  • Grew up going on  medical missions with his parents starting in high school

  • Wants to continue to do medical missions as he always has but finally as a doctor

  • Goal to give back to the Philippines where his parents came from

  • Understands the need to give back to countries where they don’t have all that we do 

  • Wants to continue working on medical missions in Southeast Asia & countries torn by natural disaster

2018

Cole Uhland, $5,000

  • Wrote a clinical research case report of a rare case of metastatic basal cell carcinoma to the bone, which is generally known not to metastasize.

  • A Dr. Karl Stockhausen Student of the Semester Award Winner in November, 2017 

  • Anatomy Teaching Assistant -  Jan, 2017 to August, 2017

  • Student Government Vice President May, 2017 to Jan, 2018 

  • Curriculum Committee Student representative Jan, 2017 to Feb, 2018 

  • Spent 6 months in a small village in northern Tanzania and worked in a few hospitals along with physicians and the hospital staff to assess their needs of medical equipment.  Worked on a project to increase the reliability of autoclaves, that due to power outages the machine would cool down, and the cycle would have to be repeated.  So, he created a system using two motor cycle batteries and wiring that could be found at automobile stores in some of the larger villages. This system allowed the autoclave to keep running for 45 minutes in case of delays in starting the generator. After installation taught the hospital mechanic and his team how to make similar devices so that they could use them for other pieces of equipment in the hospital.

Patrick Padagor, $5,000

  • Volunteered in the Philippines 2 times

  • He and a group of his fellow AUC students developed the H.A.N.D.S. program, whose purpose is to expand the existing diabetes screening done on island and to provide enhanced opportunities for diabetes education aimed at prevention, early diagnosis, and control of the disease.

  • Volunteered in the outreach programs: ICAN orphanage

  • Was a student leader for the Zika Seroprevalence study for the AUC community.

  • Involved with the SXM Player Development

Blake Salisbury, $5,000 

  • He served others medical attention under pressure was with the National Ski Patrol, starting at age 17 for 10 years.  

  • He was an AMSA, tutor, applied for HIV coordinator

2019

Kirk Sheplay, $5,000

  • Participated in 15 Medical Missions around the world

  • Goal is to always serve the underprivileged of the world

  • Ran the Community Action Day – 2 semesters

  • Raised money for the Breakfast Club – free breakfast for local school students

  • Met with local high school students to encourage them to pursue higher education

  • Goal is to give medical care to people all over the world

Mariel Chan, $5,000

  • Helped in local soup kitchens since high school

  • As a doctor she plans to designate a portion of time to provide adequate healthcare to underserved 

  • Plans to establish a strong rapport with patients, so they’ll be fully receptive to treatment

  • Desire to make quality healthcare more accessible with disadvantaged communities

  • A member of the Honor Service Society

  • Volunteered on Community Action Day

  • While on the island was a regular volunteer at a local soup kitchen, recruited and coordinated teams of volunteers 

  • Received the Karl Stockhausen Student of the Semester Award for the January, 2019, semester and funded post-Irma repairs to the soup kitchen and repairs on the van that transports the deliveries.   

Moe Ameri, $3,000

  • At 10 years old he was living in a family apartment inside his father’s hospital during the Iraqi civil war

  • Began doing research on breast cancer as an undergraduate student

  • Pursued a master's degree in biomedical sciences to expand his knowledge of the medical field

  • Volunteered to be part of the search and rescue and medical team after Hurricane Irma

  • Chair at the relocation task force from St. Maarten to England

  • Vice president of Student Government Association and then the president of SGA during third and fourth semesters

  • Believes in the values of service, commitment, perseverance, and resiliency

  • Led a group of 7 students in an unprecedented study of bush tea use in St Maarten

  • Spearheaded a student-led committee that organized an institution-wide 40th Anniversary Celebration for AUC

2020

Yassin Nayel, $5,000

  • From Egypt and wants to do global health work

  • Has pursued Trachoma eradication in Egypt

  • Co-founded (NFP) Collaborative Vision Foundation to cover surgical costs for vision restoration

  • Interned in both Egypt and Germany to compare healthcare in developed and developing countries

  • Contacted the CEO of a pharmaceutical company to provide grants for free Azithromycin for Trachoma patients in Egypt, but failed due to regulations

  • Volunteer for a specialized organization (NGO) in Cairo aiming to eradicate preventable blindness

  • Wrote about a case study aiming to raise awareness about the disease

  • Case study was being developed as an educational tool to be published

Nicole Asher, $5,000

  • Volunteered in Ghana, assisting in a free medical clinic 

  • Helped raise funds to build a school that was a mud hut with solid blocks. 

  • Has spent an extended amount of time at the school

  • Secured funding to build 3 new classrooms, living accommodations for teachers and funds needed for a school bus.

  • Goal to help the school and guide it toward self-sustainability

Ashirbad Panta, $5,000

  • Grew up in Nepal having first-hand experience of inadequate access to good healthcare

  • Worked as a medical lab technologist and then as a clinical lab analyst

  • Implemented electronic health records in rural communities in Oklahoma

  • Started med school after 8 years of working and being married

  • Goal of not simply being a doctor but also an educator for the underserved communities like the one in which he grew up

2021

Clifford Davis, $5,000

  • 4th yr. of Med. School was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

  •  After 6 years became a cancer survivor. 

  • He had to start over again in Med school because his test scores all expired

Kollin Kahler, $4,000

  • He has had a lifelong struggle with hearing loss which caused a speech impediment. 

  • He wants to start a non-profit that will fund & potentially provide Cochlear implants, surgical service & access to sound processor equipment for families w/ deaf children who finds these cost prohibitive even with insurance.

Ammary Jackson, $3,000

  • She was the caregiver for her dad, who had dementia, while going to school

  • She co-founded a golf tournament & raised $20,000 for FTD Dementia research

  • Her dad died during her first year of Medical School

2022

Mary Morse, $5,000

  • She is a Certified Nursing assistant, BA,

  • She worked with the underserved communities in Detroit,

2023

Jacqueline Nicholas, $5,000

  • Goal is to set up a clinic(s) in an underserved area abroad, similar to an urgent care. Would aspire to help provide basic training to locals looking to work as well. 

  • Another objective is to carry out vaccination campaign(s) in locations where routine vaccines remain largely inaccessible, and innumerable children die of common, preventable illnesses

  • Emergency Medicine Residency because in her future involvement abroad this is where she could have the most significant impact and would gain broad knowledge to serve various needs

Diane Salem, $5,000

  • Interested in psychiatry and/or women's health from a more alternative standpoint

  • Overcame a traumatic situation and grew from it

  • Worked on five breast screening events 

  • Was chosen to be one of seven HIV coordinators – the longest research at AUC

  • Volunteered for Art Saves Lives Foundation at SMX

Alexandria Lauray, $3,000 

  • Global Health President for AUC for 6 consecutive terms - pursuing Global Health as her focus

Meghan Mangal, $3,000

  • Founded Doctors for Change Saint Lucia (DCSL)@doctorsforchangesglobal 

  • Spearheaded a national blood drive in Saint Lucia to supplement the deficit of the local blood bank

  • DCSL held an Empowerment Symposium for high school minority females in Sint Maarten

  • Her goal is to expand improved access to healthcare resources throughout the Caribbean. 

Thanh Vu, $2,500

  • Struggled mightily with ADHD

  • Broke his clavicle but kept up with his studies in Med school

  • Against all odds, with his grit and his power to persevere, he overcame all the challenges

  • Won 1st and 2nd places in the research symposium, and got on the Dean's list of students.

  • Teaching assistant for Anatomy dissection lab, Histology, Harvey, and Ultrasound laboratory sessions

  • SGA secretary, founded a Catholic club, tutored in both Course and Peer tutoring programs

Chyrisha Rucker, $2,500

  • A birthing assistant and a Doula

  • A founding member of The Michigan Prison Doula Initiative

  • Connected to incarcerated expectant women both personally and professionally

Sam Aiken, $2,500

  • Volunteers with Body SMARTs club as a teacher for the children's school in Phillipsburg, Sint Maarten

  • Research study that is an appraisal of substance use and abuse in the most vulnerable regions in Sint Maarten

  • Was a 911 paramedic with five years of EMS experience, which inspired him to become an EM Doctor

Tsotaye Ugbye, $5,000

  • In Nigeria cared for his maternal grandfather during his battle with cancer

Alina Alam, $3,000

  • Harvey and Ultrasound TA, lead peer tutor

  • Continued teaching in Harvey and Ultrasound in the 5th semester when most student were studying for the Comp exam

  • As an Ultrasound teaching assistant,  a tumor mass was discovered on her right kidney

  • It needed to be removed as soon as possible – but couldn’t be scheduled for two months. 

  • Rather than going home she toughed it out by staying on campus to complete the rest of the semester

  • The final e3diagnosis: early-stage Renal Cell Carcinoma; the tumor was completely excised & hadn’t metastasized

  • Wants patients to feel seen, heard and supported
